Finding Nemo can't hold a candle to Mrs. Murphy's and Miss Schoff's virtual field trip to Sant Ocean Hall at the Smithsonian. With the click of a button, ALS fourth-grade students left Washington's iconic museum and traveled 3,000 miles in less than a minute to a live feed at Monterey Bay in California. Some students viewed a video from the Seattle Aquarium and others checked out the live streams from the National and Georgia aquariums.
The beautiful undersea feeds and videos revealed the marine ecosystems and the impact of overpopulation and extinction on various ecosystems. Students took on several learning challenges while enjoying the experience, including vertebrates versus invertebrates identification, animal adaptation discussions, and animal categorization based on diet: herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores.
