Middle School Academics
The Middle School curriculum is designed to meet the significant growth and transitions that take place for students during these years. From the sixth grade orientation to the final eight grade chapel service, students are guided, encouraged and challenged toward being young adults. Emphasis is placed on the acquiring of skills necessary to work capably as independent learners. Students learn how to study, budget their time, prepare for a test, plan a project, and work in a group. Our focus is on preparing our students for both the academic challenge of high school and the challenge of life decisions.
We stress personal responsibility for actions and actively reinforce character development. We expect students to be active partners in their learning, giving their best efforts toward developing a strong academic background that will enable them to use their God-given potential.
We have a one-to-one technology program in our Middle School. All Middle School students are provided with a Chromebook for use in classes and to take home for homework.
Besides the core curriculum of Language Arts, Math, Science, History and Bible, students are also required to take Art, Physical Education, Music, Computer and Study Skills. Foreign Language and other elective classes constitute more choices for 7th and 8th grade students.
Middle School Course Listing
Course Descriptions:
Bible
Middle School Bible courses are designed to help strengthen students’ spiritual foundation as they become more aware of the challenges of culture and the world around them. Middle School students also attend Chapel every Thursday morning. Classes are given the opportunity to plan and produce chapels for their own grade level. Middle School students each participate in Small Groups. They meet as part of Chapel program to discuss each theme. Small groups will also meet for lunch about once a month and they will participate together in service projects.
English / Lanuage Arts
Students study grammar, writing, literature, and vocabulary each year. Writing instruction and standards are emphasized across all academic subjects in the Middle School curriculum. Independent reading is assigned and encouraged at each grade level.
Social Studies
Emphasis is placed on the importance of historical thinking and understanding. Geography, economics, and governing concepts are woven throughout each course.
Courses include Ancient World History, Medieval World History, and U.S. History.
Mathematics
Students deepen their arithmetic and algebraic foundation along with problem-solving abilities through the use of hands-on cross-curricular projects and group activities, integrating and honing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Middle School courses include General Math (grade 6), Pre-Algebra (grade 7), Introduction to Algebra, and Algebra 1 (both 8th grade courses).
Science
Middle School Science content and instruction are highly interactive, with labs and activities to inspire, drive, and reinforce learning. 3D printing projects and a variety of Makerspace projects are always a favorite.
Courses include Environmental & Earth Science, Biology/Human Anatomy, and Physical Science. Several popular electives (i-Design, NatureWorks, Inquiring Minds) give students extended opportunity to pursue their passions while applying scientific inquiry and engineering design methodologies.
Music
Middle School classes are offered in Music Exploration and in Chapel Music. Students who take Chapel Music play their instruments and/or sing weekly during Chapels. In addition, students can take Chorale or Band. The Chorale and Band have two school concerts each year and a competition performance at Hershey Park.
Theatre
Students may take a Drama elective in 7th or 8th grade. Students also enjoy being involved in annual Middle School productions. Some of these have included:
Variety Show
Beauty and the Beast
Annie Jr.
Willie Wonka Jr.
Wouldn’t Ma be Proud
Visual Arts
Students express themselves through art using a variety of mediums as they discover their own artistic skills and creativity. The basic elements of art and design are taught to students of all abilities and the main lobby and hallways are regularly decorated with their beautiful works of art. All Middle School students meet for art class three times a week for one semester in grades 6 through 8.
Physical Education
Students take Physical Education for one semester each year. Skill building, health, and lifetime fitness and activity are highlighted.
