MAD SCIENTIST

This camp is designed to not only teach science, but to provide students the opportunity to DO science. We will explore different science topics throughout the week, each day filled with exciting demonstrations and hands on experiments that will help students better understand the science behind how the world works. We will discover how to make ice cream, what makes a light stick glow, and why a roller coaster doesn’t fall in the middle of a loop. Students will also have the opportunity to take home several great demonstrations.

This hands-on camp will explore all new experiments and demonstrations! Campers will get to discover the physics behind Angry Birds put it into life size action. We will explore the amazing biology of our own bodies as we look at various systems & how they work. We will do some investigative work as we check out the health of the stream on campus. Together we will explore the chemistry of some of our favorite foods and why they taste so good. Along the way, we will learn a lot, get our hands dirty and get to see up close and personal how the amazing world around us works!

About the Director: For the past 13 years, Jake Palumbo has taught science to students of all ages. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Richmond and his Masters in Education from Covenant College. He currently teaches Chemistry at the AACS Upper School, and has also taught Biology, Physics, and Physical Science.

EAGLES STEM

This hands on STEM camp will creatively cover all aspects of STEM through daily activities in areas such as electricity, flight, space and physics. As they work through different STEM activities each day, they will also work on their very own rocket, which they may launch at the end of the week!

EAGLES ROBOTICS
Director: AACS Teacher Madelyn Smith
Dates: July 17 – July 21

This beginners robotics camp will allow the students an opportunity to build, redesign, and program robots. The campers will learn the basics of robotics and the science that goes along with it. This camp is for everyone with any interest in robotics!

About the Director: Madelyn Smith currently teaches Engineering & Technology at the AACS Upper School campus. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Tuskegee University. Prior to teaching, she worked in the Automotive Industry at Toyota and General Motors in interior, safety, concept vehicles, and was the lead engineer for Corvette seats. She has developed and implemented many STEM activities. Most recently she piloted the AACS Severn Lower School STEM Day which was led by the upper level engineering students. They have expanded to include the AACS Annapolis Lower School students. Mrs. Smith looks for every opportunity to expose students to STEM!
 
EAGLES CODING

This beginner level camp is designed for kids with little to no programming experience and will use Scratch, Tynker, and Python.  Campers will start with the basics and explore the essential building blocks behind object-oriented programing through creating fun, interactive stories, and simple games.  Campers will create animated stories and games, learning programming concepts in 3 different languages (Scratch, Tynker, and Python) while developing a foundation of computational thinking- an essential skill in today's tech-driven world.  We break up the day with supervised outside play, sports, and activities.  Kids think creatively and learn how to program their own stories, games, and animations, as well as how to share their creations on the web.  Take home a copy of your own game at the end of the class!  

About the Director: Josh Danza is an Oracle certified Java Programmer and PostgreSQL certified Database Administrator who works in the Educational Support department at AACS, assisting students in Algebra and Geometry.  Josh has a Bachelor's in Information Systems and Technology Management and has 7 years of programming experience with Java, C#, Python, Visual Basic and Javascript.

SENIOR PRACTICUM JUMP-START

About the Director: Mrs. Blattenberger is an experienced teacher who has worked in a variety of educational roles. She has been a classroom teacher and a principal, working with students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Currently she works at the Upper School at Annapolis Area Christian School, as a member of the Educational Support team and serves as a Senior Mentor.

SAT PREP
Director: Eric Nebbia
Dates: Session 1: July 10 – July 20 (Monday – Thursday of both weeks)
Session 2: July 24 – August 3 (Monday – Thursday of both weeks)

This is an intensive, focused review of the math and verbal sections of the SAT, as well as a condensed review of the writing section, designed to help students maximize their scores. Two SAT/PSAT tests will be given – one at the beginning and one at the end of the course so that progress may be measured.

NOTE: The SAT Test will be administered on the first day and seventh day of class, where sessions will be 4 hours in length, from 8:00am – 12:00pm

About the Director: Eric Nebbia holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Swarthmore College and a Masters Degree from the University of Notre Dame. He currently teaches high school English at Annapolis Area Christian School. Mr. Nebbia has been teaching and tutoring high school students on the new SAT since 2006.

Calling all inventors, creators, builders and designers! Come build some awesome creations with us! We will create our own designs and make structures using recyclable materials, Legos and many other interesting items such as Lifesavers, paper bags and marshmallows.
Skills necessary… none! Skills gained: communication, problem solving, reasoning, developing creativity, and team work.

We will enrich your math skills through math fact games, problem solving competitions, logical reasoning and spatial math concept tournaments. Who knew math could be so much fun!

Come discover, experiment, and create as we learn about the colliding worlds of art and science in this STEAM-based camp.  We will create biomes from around the world, star gaze at constellations, master meteorology, investigate how things work and dabble in chemistry and physics.  Put on your lab coat and grab your art supplies because this STEAM camp will rock your world!

About Little Scholars: Little Scholars is devoted to serving preschool and elementary children through private tutoring, enrichment classes and summer camps. About the Founder: Stephanie Jefferson, founder of Little Scholars, has an extensive background in early childhood education with more than fifteen years of experience working with children. Her expertise includes early childhood development, preschool curriculum design and assessment, inclusion analysis, and developmental needs identification. Mrs. Jefferson holds a Bachelor of Science degree from East Carolina University and she earned a Master of Education degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
 
LITTLE ROBOT MECHANIC

This camp is an introduction into the world of robotics. Campers will learn about the six simple machines and how they are incorporated into more complex machines. Campers will also learn about circuits and power sources as they build our “Mars-like” RC Rover. The radio-controlled RC Rover is capable of performing 23 experiments and activities. Campers will also have fun constructing our Aluminum Can Robot.

Campers will be able to take home the robot they build for ours of fun after the camp week has finished!

DEEP SPACE ROBOTICS

Camp Deep Space takes campers to the edge of the universe on a mission to make a distant planet habitable for humans. Using LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Education Components and software, along with videos and animations campers, build and learn programming, tackle building challenges, and hone their robotic and project planning skills. Science factoids are interspersed throughout, accompanying engineering design activities tied into space exploration.

Camp Deep Space’s curriculum has been developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Robot Academy.

As an extra bonus, campers construct and launch two of their very own Estes Rockets. Deep Space is for beginners and experienced LEGO MINDSTORM users. Parents are invited to join us on Friday’s Family Day to view their child’s rocket launch
