MAD SCIENTIST

This camp is designed to not only teach science, but to provide students the opportunity to DO science. We will explore different science topics throughout the week, each day filled with exciting demonstrations and hands on experiments that will help students better understand the science behind how the world works. We will discover how to make ice cream, what makes a light stick glow, and why a roller coaster doesn’t fall in the middle of a loop. Students will also have the opportunity to take home several great demonstrations. 

MAD SCIENTIST RETURNS!

This hands-on camp will explore all new experiments and demonstrations! Campers will get to discover the physics behind Angry Birds put it into life size action. We will explore the amazing biology of our own bodies as we look at various systems & how they work. We will do some investigative work as we check out the health of the stream on campus. Together we will explore the chemistry of some of our favorite foods and why they taste so good. Along the way, we will learn a lot, get our hands dirty and get to see up close and personal how the amazing world around us works!

About the Director: For the past 13 years, Jake Palumbo has taught science to students of all ages. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Richmond and his Masters in Education from Covenant College. He currently teaches Chemistry at the AACS Upper School, and has also taught Biology, Physics, and Physical Science.

EAGLES STEM

This hands on STEM camp will creatively cover all aspects of STEM through daily activities in areas such as electricity, flight, space and physics. As they work through different STEM activities each day, they will also work on their very own rocket, which they may launch at the end of the week!

About the Director: Madelyn Smith currently teaches Engineering & Technology at the AACS Upper School campus. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Tuskegee University. Prior to teaching, she worked in the Automotive Industry at Toyota and General Motors in interior, safety, concept vehicles, and was the lead engineer for Corvette seats. She has developed and implemented many STEM activities. Most recently she piloted the AACS Severn Lower School STEM Day which was led by the upper level engineering students. They have expanded to include the AACS Annapolis Lower School students. Mrs. Smith looks for every opportunity to expose students to STEM!

This beginner level camp is designed for kids with little to no programming experience and will use Scratch, Tynker, and Python.  Campers will start with the basics and explore the essential building blocks behind object-oriented programing through creating fun, interactive stories, and simple games.  Campers will create animated stories and games, learning programming concepts in 3 different languages (Scratch, Tynker, and Python) while developing a foundation of computational thinking- an essential skill in today's tech-driven world.  We break up the day with supervised outside play, sports, and activities.  Kids think creatively and learn how to program their own stories, games, and animations, as well as how to share their creations on the web.  Take home a copy of your own game at the end of the class!  
 
EAGLES CODING: LEVEL 2

This intermediate level camp is a continuation of Eagles Coding: Level 1. Campers will continue learning the basics of computer programming, game design, and explore the essential building blocks behind object-oriented programming through creating fun, interactive stories, and simple games. Campers will create animated stories and games, learning programming concepts in 3 different languages (Java, Python, and Scratch) while developing a foundation of computational thinking—an essential skill in today’s tech-driven world.  About the Director: Josh Danza is an Oracle certified Java Programmer and PostgreSQL certified Database Administrator who works in the Educational Support department at AACS, assisting students in Algebra and Geometry.  Josh has a Bachelor's in Information Systems and Technology Management and has 7 years of programming experience with Java, C#, Python, Visual Basic and Javascript.


SAT PREP
Director: Eric Nebbia
Dates: July 9 – July 19 (Monday – Thursday of both weeks)
Time: 9:00am – 11:30am
Gender/Grade: Boys and Girls entering grades 10 to 12
Location: Sulin Hall, Upper School
Cost: $255

This is an intensive, focused review of the math and verbal sections of the SAT, as well as a condensed review of the writing section, designed to help students maximize their scores. Two SAT/PSAT tests will be given – one at the beginning and one at the end of the course so that progress may be measured.

NOTE: The SAT Test will be administered on the first day and seventh day of class, where sessions will be 4 hours in length, from 8:00am – 12:00pm

About the Director: Eric Nebbia holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Swarthmore College and a Masters Degree from the University of Notre Dame. He currently teaches high school English at Annapolis Area Christian School. Mr. Nebbia has been teaching and tutoring high school students on the new SAT since 2006.
 
SPACE ENGINEER
Director: Club SciKidz
Dates: July 30 - August 3

Cost: $335 (Includes $29 Lab Fee)

Using LEGO® bricks, campers will design and build structures and space vehicles for living on far away planets. Space Engineer includes instruction on the Earth, Moon, stars, and planets as well as the scientific topics of force, friction, simple machines, and gravity.
Campers will also join the crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to learn about propulsion, friction and more. Counselors will assign specific projects each day that include: a rotating satellite, space buggy, a stunning spaceship, terrestrial homes that can withstand alien atmospheres and a host of other exciting projects.

Campers will also build and launch two Estes Rockets as they learn about the physics of Space Travel. Parents are invited to join us on Friday’s Family Day to view their camper’s creations. This is a camp your child won’t want to miss!

About Club SciKidz: Club SciKidz was founded on the principle that parents want to provide their children with exciting, challenging, and life impacting academic enrichment experiences. INTRO TO DRONE CODING GAMES

 Intro to Drone Coding Games is specifically designed for campers with little to no experience flying drones or coding. Campers will learn the basic principles of how to code drones to fly. To complement the coding aspect of the program, we teach the campers how to utilize basic flight terminology to conquer fun and interactive flight challenges. Campers will learn to pitch, yaw, and roll through self-created obstacle courses and then utilize iPads to code the drones through the obstacle courses. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program.

 

ULTIMATE DRONE OBSTACLE CHALLENGE

Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge is specifically designed for both the novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. This is week is filled with pure action as students enjoy one of the world’s fastest growing sports, Drone Obstacle Racing. Campers will first learn about the basic safety of drone flying and the history behind drone racing as a sport. From there, campers will progress through various skill challenges and learn how to perform various exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with the drone’s speed and agility. Campers will use iPads and remote controls to navigate the drone through short and long obstacle courses. Participants will also create the design and help build the the obstacle course in preparation for the last day’s final activity and competition. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program.

DRONE ESCAPE AND RESCUE

Drone search and rescue is a necessity for first responders around the world, adding a new layer of solutions to save lives across the globe. Now campers to can take part in and learn from simulated missions during this action-packed, creative, and educational program. Participants will learn to fly drones and rely on their rescue team to collect vital data in specific “rescue areas” to locate “victims” and safely rescue them. We use age-appropriate and cutting-edge technology methods available for creating plans, missions, and maps. Participants will also learn invaluable lessons on how to simply, quickly and accurately make informed and targeted suggestions for real-world positive applications. 

DRONE RACING & OBSTACLE COURSE CHALLENGE

Drone Racing is filled with pure action as students enjoy one of the world’s fastest growing sports, Drone Racing. Campers will first learn about the basic safety of drone flying and the history behind drone racing as a sport. From there, campers will progress through various skill challenges and learn how to perform various exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with the drone’s speed and agility. Flight squads post up against one another in friendly competition when they race themselves and the clock. Students first maneuver the drone through creative obstacle courses before taking on the challenge of flying for speed. Participants contribute fully in this program as they create the design and help build the the obstacle course in preparation for the last day’s final activities and competition. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. Drone safety and social responsibilities of flying are included in this program. 

DRONE SUPERHERO MISSIONS

Superhero Missions is specifically designed for both the novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. Our instructors will open the creative minds of participants as campers attack and defend against Superheroes and Villains. Students will begin the week learning basic maneuvers before using their “Spidey-Sense” to conquer missions such as: Batman’s Drone-Mobile Escape, The Breakout of Iron Man and more. Participants will storyboard their own escape missions while other students attempt to outsmart them using the drone to locate and capture. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer.

INTRO TO DRONE FLYING MISSIONS

Intro to Drone Flying Missions is specifically designed for campers with little to no experience flying drones. We use the safest and most reliable drone products on the market, including the Parrot™ drones for enhanced safety and most of all, fun. Campers will learn the basics of drone technology and safety before taking to the air. Through the use of iPad flight simulators and clear instructions on basic flying maneuvers, young Drobots’ pilots will experience a program filled with excitement, games, challenges, and learning. Campers work all week long to prepare for the most enjoyable part of the week: the Ultimate Drone Games that include events such as: Tic-Tac-Drone, Drone Darts, Duck-Duck-Drone, and more. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program.
